Understanding the Effects of Hurricane Katrina on Businesses in Louisiana

Christian found a public dataset released by the United States government. Fueled by curiosity, he performed an economic analysis with Python using tools such as Pandas, NumPy, and STATA to understand the impact of Hurricane Katrina. Exploiting the Difference-in-Difference design using the Hurricane as treatment, he finds that the disaster increased unemployment and business closure rates of coastal counties in the state of Louisiana.
Reviewing an International Organisation’s Strategic Objective and Achievement

An international organisation hired Christian to synthesise data reported by their member states. His task is to provide actionable recommendations to improve the organisation’s financial resource allocation. The report written by Christian and his team became part of the discussion during the organisation’s quadrennial meeting. Besides policy advice, Christian helped his client construct a methodology to assess their member state’s future financial needs.
Reviewing Germany’s Multilateral Projects for a Government Agency

Christian and his team won the bid to conduct a systematic analysis of Germany’s multilateral development programmes. This review focuses on Germany’s effort to combat greenhouse gases in developing countries. The consulting project aims to analyse the effectiveness of these multilateral development programmes using techniques such as Natural Language Processing and Text-as-Data analysis.
Identifying the Zombie Firms in Indonesia

Christian constructed a novel dataset of Indonesian zombie firms using firm-level financial data extracted from Thomson Eikon Datastream. Using his knowledge of Python programming, he wrote a script that automatically identified zombie firms. This project is a part of Christian’s Master’s dissertation and upcoming article on zombie firms. The dataset shows that zombie firms have a significant presence in Indonesia.
Assisting an Economics Expert Witness

A senior Economist tasked Christian with collecting a historical dataset of safe assets such as the British Gilt and Bank Bonds. Christian helped his client build 25 years of post-bankruptcy economic loss projections for a manufacturing firm. As an assistant to the consultant, Christian leveraged his investigative research skills to build a dataset collected from sources such as the Internet Archives and Datastream.
